Age Defying Actives
Peptides – we all want them, but what exactly is a peptide?
Skin is made up mostly of collagen; it is the foundation that gives your skin its support and thickness. Young people have lots of collagen and taut, smooth skin. In contrast, older people have much less – and thin, wrinkled skin. Collagen is made up of long chains of amino acids strung together. When collagen is broken down, short segments of 3-5 amino acids form, called peptides, which are ‘mini proteins’ and very active molecules. They act as a signal to tell your skin it was damaged and to make new collagen. So science has now created skincare peptides to help replicate this. Peptides are very expensive and applying them directly to your skin is a way to trick your skin into thinking that it has lost collagen recently and needs to make more. At Mama Mio we use many variants of extremely expensive and extremely effective peptide technology – in high percentages so you get the maximum benefit.
Free radicals are little rogue cells that attack other, healthy atoms to steal the electrons they are missing – causing damage that then affects the collagen, and therefore the strength of your skin. Antioxidants ‘neutralise’ free radicals, disarming them so they no longer attack your healthy cells. Apply them topically in your skincare and make them a daily part of your diet and your skin will glow with health and thanks. Here are a few great antioxidants that you can find in our skincare:
• Vitamin C - BVOSC™ This is a very powerful form of Vitamin C that is especially created to penetrate to a deep level and give you all the amazing benefits. It acts as an anti-oxidant, protecting against free radical damage, gives a little natural UV protection, encourages collagen production, whilst rebalancing uneven skin tone and discolouration
• Green Tea is loaded with natural anti-oxidants to help fight free radicals and keep skin looking younger and fresher.
• Vitamin E, nature’s wonder-healer, is an excellent anti-xidant, renowned for keeping skin in good condition and increasing the growth of new skin cells.
• Avocado Oil is moisturising, rich in antioxidants and Omegas and rich in vitamins D and E.
• CoQ10 is a powerful anti-oxidant that prevents and repairs collagen degradation and is very important for skin strength and elasticity.
Moisturisers and Humectants are all brilliant at helping restore the elasticity of your skin, plumping up, smoothing out wrinkles and giving you a perfect base for make-up or helping deliver powerful actives for face and body. Check out the Dry Skin Actives list to read in detail about the difference between a moisturizer and a humectant and why you need a perfect combo of both.
Dry Skin Actives
If really dry skin is your problem, you need ingredients that are actually going to help ‘cure’ the dryness rather than just mask it. So often you slather on the cream, only to find your skin even drier a few hours later. Here’s some knowhow that may help you understand exactly what your skin needs:
Humectants and Moisturisers
Humectants are different from moisturisers because they bond with the outer layers of your skin to keep the irritants out – and the moisture in. Many traditional moisturisers don’t seal in the body's own moisture but artificially lubricate and mask the dryness, a bit like boot polish. When they wear off, the lubrication is gone and the original dryness remains. Humectants seal the skin and hold hydration in, increasing elasticity at a much deeper level. That said, moisturisers are extremely beneficial in helping your skin feel immediately softer and smoother. So ideally, you need a combination of both a humectant and a moisturiser to get the benefits of both.
Hyaluronic Acid An incredibly powerful humectant -this is your skin’s own moisturiser: fantastic at plumping up skin cells so they look firm, plump and dewy. At Mama Mio, we use a naturally derived hyaluronic acid in all our facial products and even some of our body products, as it has such a direct and long-term benefit. Each molecule of hyaluronic acid can attract and hold 1000x its own weight in water, so it’s amazing at keeping your skin smooth and moisturised – all day long!
Omegas Amazing moisturising ingredients that your skin needs. Did you notice we really love Omegas here at Mama Mio! They are essential fatty acids that are vital to the health of every cell in your body – and that includes your skin bigtime. Often your diet can be low in the key Omegas needed for healthy, nourished skin but the great thing about our skin is that it knows how to use Omegas when applied topically so they don’t go to waste. That’s’ why we include Omega-rich ingredients in our facial skincare and our bodycare to give your skin the vital superfood it needs. Here are a few of the Omega-rich oils we use in our whole range of skincare”
The following oils, butters and extracts are amazingly rich in Omegas – Sweet Almond Oil, Shea Butter, Evening Primrose Oil, Jojoba Seed Oil, Meadowfoam, Olive Oil, Gold of Pleasure Oil, Quinoa Extract, Safflower, Wheatgerm & Rosehipseed Oils and Avocado, Borage Seed & Argan Oils. You can find all these nourishing ingredients in our Mama Mio skincare.
Aloe Vera Nature’s moisturising wonderplant, Aloe Vera is super-nurturing, calming, and restorative. It also increases the availability of oxygen to the skin and helps maintain the strength of the skin tissues. We use organic aloe vera leaf juice in many of our skincare products to care for your skin at every level. Aloe Vera – often described as Aloe Barbadensis leaf juice is a powerful moisturiser, which penetrates the skin supplying moisture directly to the tissues. It’s renowned for its soothing and calming effect on damaged or even sunburned-skin. Aloe improves skin tone and colour by increasing the blood flow, reducing skin redness, and evening out discolourations. We use Aloe Vera leaf jiuce as the No 1 ingredient in all our Mama Mio Face Care.
Glycerin is a wonderful humectant that attracts and retains moisture, improving elasticity and skin suppleness at a very deep level. It’s also highly ‘hygroscopic’, which means that it absorbs water from the air, creating a barrier to protect against moisture loss. Our glycerin is 100% vegetable derived.
Cellulite busting actives
We have all been suckered in by cellulite creams with miracle claims. Remember that there are a few ingredients that you definitely want in your hip and thigh cream that are tried and trusted to make a real visible difference to orange peel. Any cellulite treatment, however, is NOT a one night stand. You need to use them every day for a good 30 days to really see a benefit. And if you are wondering how a cream can affect cellulite, it is because these ingredients create a catalytic reaction in your skin – like a buzz effect that stimulates circulation through the top layers. Remember to massage creams into cellulitey areas in a very deep, firm way – massage is amazing to help disperse and diminish those lumpy bits, so use a little less product and more elbow grease for best effects, Here is your cellulite check list:
Algae Extracts are rich in nourishing minerals that have a stimulating effect on the skin, improving elasticity, boosting circulation, helping with toxin elimination and preventing water retention. Well used in hardcore spa treatments, marine based ingredients – like algae, seaweed, (we use a special brown algae extract called laminaria digitata) – are perfect for helping with cellulite.
Caffeine isn’t just in your coffee… it’s a valuable skincare ingredient because it works as a catalyst, getting your cells excited and creating a circulation-increasing buzz – perfect for cellulite. It is also a diuretic, helping reduce the wrong kind of water retention that gives you puffy thighs.. Moisturisers – as described in our cellulite 101 video, you need a two pronged attack on your cellulite that combines the stimulating actives with a really good moisturising base. Part of the cause of misshapen fat is lack of hyrdration – both internally and externally. You need to rehydrate the skin, and in turn, re-elasticise the connective tissue that will then help the fat sit smoothly under your skin. Shea butter, glycerin, any Omega rich oils like sweet almond oil, quinoa extract will help greatly. Don’t forget to massage deeply for maximum results!
Exfoliation – exfoliation is brilliant for helping with cellulite by increasing circulation and also removing the dead skin at the surface so any powerful skincare actives you apply next will work that much better. Use either manual exfoliation – scrubs (like our Omega Body Buff) or body brushing (see our Bootcamp For Butts kit) – or use facial peel technology with enzyme exfoliation that gradually dissolves the dead skin cells revealing fresh new skin cells. Both types of exfoliation are great at increasing circulation and your natural skin renewal process.
