Here is some seriously detailed information on ingredients and a long brag about why our fragrances are so darned awesome when you are pregnant, and when you are not.
Read on if you are very interested but don't say we didn't warn you - it is quite a lot of detail!

Are there any ingredients I should be avoiding in skincare and cosmetic products during pregnancy and nursing?

There are a lot of questionable ingredients used in skincare and we want Mama Mio to be completely free of any of these.  Which is why we have created our ‘No Nasties’ policy. We want to be sure you feel safe and sound using Mama Mio.  We would like you to rest easy knowing that those Mama Mio folk have done all the research for you and keep our products clean and healthy.  Our ‘No Nasties’ ban is a promise that you will never find any of these in Mama Mio: synthetic fragrance, petrochemicals, sulfate detergents, synthetic colours, sodium laureth sulfate, animal ingredients and parabens. In addition, Mama Mio products do not contain potential irritants including: PPGs, urea, D.E.A, T.E.A, PABA and other synthetic sunscreens, aliphatic alcohols/hydrocarbons, phthalates, xenoestrogens, fumarates, amines, alkanolamines, synthetic AHAs/BHAs, polyacrylamide, metacrylate, elastomer, poloxamer, styrene, vinyl, polyquaternium, synthetic chelating agents, nylon, nitriles, nitrates, nitrosamine releasers, bromates, fluor, aluminum and alumina.

This is a very very long list - aren't you glad that it is us who does all the research for you!

If you want to learn a little more we thought we would explain briefly about the three worse cosmetic offenders....

Parabens - a common preservative used in beauty products In the past 10 years numerous studies have shown that parabens are estrogenic (they mimic the effects of estrogen in the body) - this can cause a wide variety of problems from male fertility concerns to an increased risk of breast cancer.

Petrolatum - a derivative of petroleum, instinctively it doesn't feel like a good idea to be rubbing petroleum derivatives into your skin. Research confirms this: petrolatum is listed as a probable human carcinogen in the European Union's Dangerous Substances Directive (UNECE 2004).

Sodium Laureth/Lauryl Sulfate - a very effective ‘foaming agent’ and is commonly used because it is so inexpensive. It is so common you will find it in most ‘foamy’ things such as shampoo, toothpaste, floor soap and car cleaners. Unsurprisingly, it is very drying, a well known skin irritant and displays a significant level of skin absorption. Once it has been absorbed it has been found to act as an estrogen which can cause a wide variety of problems in the body.  Mostly we think it wrong to clean your car and clean your body with the same soap – duh!

Stretch Marks are a major concern in pregnancy. Doctors said the most common question they always heard in pregnancy is 'will I get stretch marks?'. So if you are worried, you are not alone!

Lets set the stage - pregnancy is the biggest challenge your skin will ever face. Think about it... you're going to grow 30+ inches in 40 weeks and then shrink back down, that is tough, then in a few years time (or 10 months if you are Sian) hit repeat! Aging , sun damage gravity – those all happen over a period of years. Pregnancy happens in a period of months. You need to make sure your skin is at it’s best to cope with the strain.

The secret to protecting your skin against the dread stretch mark is to build up the strength and elasticity of your skin. Mama Mio is your secret weapon to cope with the whole 9 month s t r e t c h; keeping you safe and sound, whilst mega-elasticizing your skin so you regain your former glory after your baby arrives.

Stretch Marks are tears that occur in the dermal layer of your skin due to a prolonged distention and pressure. Such as pregnancy. The pressure on your skin becomes too great and the collagen and elastin fibres give way. If you are wondering whether you will get pregnancy stretch marks; there is a genetic pre-disposition towards them – unfortunately, it is impossible to predict, until it is too late and you have them. Think about it this way: wrinkles around your eyes are also genetic and we all use the best eye cream to stave off time and minimize smile lines for as long as possible. We are trying to encourage women to think about stretch marks in the same way. Of course, as with everything, there are some who are genetically gifted and who won’t get a single stretch mark even though they took twins to full term (those are also the people who no doubt complain about having to eat to keep weight on!) but for the rest of us it takes some work and dedication. If your mother had stretch marks or if you already have the fine silvery lines of teen-growth stretch marks, you are most vulnerable. The important conclusion to draw is that prevention is the best cure for stretch marks.

The secret to protecting your skin against the dread stretch mark is to build up the strength and elasticity of your skin.

You want to make your skin as strong and stretchy as you possibly can. The way we do that at Mama Mio is through Omegas 3, 6 and 9 which are absolutely crucial to the strength and elasticity of your skin.

Let me explain, Omega 3 6 and 9 are crucial to so much in our bodies – but we are unable to manufacture them ourselves – we have to either eat them in our food, or take supplements. So imagine we have a little cookie jar full of them, and when you are pregnant your baby is raiding your cookie jar to make some very important things (like eyes, brains central nervous system!) and we will give them joyfully. But this means our omega levels dip to the lowest levels, which means your skin is about to grow 30 inches and face it’s biggest challenge when at it’s weakest point. Bad plan right? But by applying tons of the omegas 3, 6 and 9 directly onto the skin, you will give your skin the strength it needs to fight stretch marks and maintain elasticity as it shrinks back down.

Interestingly Essential Fatty acids make up 30% of the dry weight of your retina, and 20% of the dry weight of your brain… during pregnancy your brain actually shrinks by up to 2 % and this is purely the loss of Essential Fatty Acids. So by all means take a supplement – but your body has a hierarchy where it will send the Omegas and your skin is at the bottom of the pile. So by applying them topically you will get the immediate benefits to the strength and elasticity of your skin. Continual and plentiful use of omega 3, 6 and 9 will nourish the lipid layer of the skin, helping to maintain the suppleness and elasticity. Research has clinically proven that omegas help skin elasticity and improve the very integrity of skin cells – helping your skin stretch and recover.

Now please notice that I keep talking about Stretch Mark Protection, not prevention. Can we actually prevent stretch marks? No. We cannot, stretch marks are hereditary like so many things to do with our skin. But what we can promise you is we will help you put up the best fight against stretch marks. Think about it this way; wrinkles around your eyes are also genetic and we use the best eye cream we can to stave them off and minimize them when they appear. The Mama Mio message is put up the best fight against stretch marks. So by applying Mama Mio Tummy Rub twice daily we firmly believe that you are giving your skin the very best chance to get thoruhg pregnancy without stretch marks. And judging by the thousands of emails we have received praising Tummy Rub to high heaven there are a lot of women who absolutely believe in the protective powers of our Tummy Rub.

The Mama Mio message is to put up a fight!

If you notice stretch marks on your pregnant belly... don't worry! Start using Mama Mio Goodbye Stretch Marks to begin to fade your existing stretch marks (3 times daily, paint it on like finger paint covering each stretch mark. Let it dry for 1 minute then applying your chosen Tummy Rub Stretch Mark Oil or Stretch Mark Butter. We know it is boring to have that many stages – but it is important to heal the existing stretch marks and help prevent any new ones. Both products are completely safe to use whilst pregnant and whilst breastfeeding Although it sounds like a big commitment – it will really help.

If You have existing Stretch Marks our Goodbye stretch Marks is the most powerful stretch mark minimiser on the market. It contains four active ingredients at the highest potency to improve the texture of stretch marks, reduce discolouration and pigmentation, even out natural skin tone, regenerate and repair skin cells at both a deep tissue level and on the surface.

It is a big commitment - you need to use it 3 times a day for 12 weeks - but it will give you the very best results a cream can make to stretch marks. Notice I am being realistic - the amount of change will depend on the age of the marks and the depth of the damage - but remeber, this is the best formulation available and so if you are going to try one cream - this is it.

Having spent a good chunk of our lives talking about or being pregnant.... we have developed a little handy dandy 10 step list of 10 tips that will keep you feeling gorgeous and strong and sane and celebratory throughout your nine months.

Congratulations!

1. Rest. Remember that being tired when you are pregnant is not like being tired before you were pregnant. Before you could always find the extra reserve to push yourself, but when you are out of energy when you are pregnant. That is it. You have no reserve. Give in to that and put yourself in a chair with your feet up and enjoy!

2. Rub. Take good care of your skin - grab your Mama Mio Tummy Rub of choice and make the whole ritual of rubbing in your stretch mark protection a pleasure. In the beginning you are rubbing to protect your skin, but as your bump grows your baby will fill your hands and it is a beautiful time to dream, and bond and think of names and experience the wonder of creation.

3. Rant. You have a free pass to have at least 4 tantrums in a pregnancy. So be sure to use them and have a blast behaving like a 2 year old (soon enough you will be on the receiving end of 2 year tantrums!). But no more than 4 if you can help it - or it may become a bad habit.

4. Accept. When someone offers to carry something, or do something for you, give you a seat, give you a lift..... just accept graciously, it is such an an unusual experience and should definitely be enjoyed to the fullest.

5. Flaunt. Your boobs will never ever look this good again - wear low cut tops (way lower than your norm but for goodness sake don't ever cross the jordan line, such a bad look!)and love your luscious look.

6. Speak. This is the time in your life to talk to strangers....Aren't people so lovely to you when you are pregnant? Taking the risk to tell you you look amazing, or asking how pregnant you are or generally just engaging with you in a way we are so unused to in our busy busy don't talk to anyone society. It is quite surprising and absolutely wonderful.

7. Dance. Your baby might as well learn about rhythm now - and you will love it and it is so good for your body, strength and flexibility.

8. Vitality. Don't treat yourself like you sick - you are actually at the peak of health. So live life to the fullest.

9. Shut Up. If someone tries to tell you a story about their awful birthing experience - just look them in the eyes and tell them to shut up. What is it about women that they want to scare you with their horror stories - what a horrible thing to do to someone who is pregnant. It is such bad behaviour and you owe it to yourself, to the next woman who would have to hear their stupid story and to all the pregnant women in the world to say. No, shut up, I don't want to hear you frighten me - it is just plain wrong!

10. Spa. Pregnancy is a magical magical time - but quite physically and psychologically stressful - the perfect time to check out of reality and check into the spa! Our Mama's Touch programme is in about 300 gorgeous spa's around the world and there is bound to be one near you for a totally safe and totally specific perfect pregnancy pampering treatment.
