Beauty Recycling: Our New Sustainability Manifesto

Waste workers in Aurangabad, India

At Mama Mio, it’s important to us that we tread gently on the planet for future generations to come. That’s why we’re so excited to introduce our NEW sustainability manifesto and beauty recycling scheme, to help us become a plastic neutral certified brand and create a greener world for your little ones.

Keep scrolling to read more about our NEW beauty recycling schemes and the steps we’re taking to help protect the planet and make recycling your beauty packaging easy and hassle free!

1. Our New Recycling Scheme

The beauty industry is dealing with a serious plastic crisis. Globally, it is producing over 120 billion units of plastic packaging per year and only 9% of all the plastic waste it creates is being recycled. What’s more, is that 79% is ending up in landfills or the environment. That’s a lot of plastic, mama!

We want to help combat this problem and help create a less wasteful world. Sometimes, knowing the best thing to do with your empty Mama Mio products can be confusing or take up a lot of your time. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce our new recycling scheme, RecycleMe, that is simple, free of charge and can be completed in just a few easy steps!

Beauty recycling

How Does It Work?

Step One: Step One: Subscribe up to our scheme by filling out the form, here! Once signed up we will send a unique QR code to your email address.

Step Two: Clean out your empty products and pop them in a shipping box, separate from unrecyclable Mama Mio products and other brands.

Step Three: Use your unique code to generate a returns code and drop your parcel off at your chosen courier point – Who said recycling had to be confusing? Not us, mama!

Once you have returned your empties, they will be sent to our recycling team who will begin the process of recycling your beauty products into post-consumer recycled packaging for brand new environmentally friendly products and sustainable skincare packaging!

What Are The Benefits?

  • It’s free to use: It is completely free of charge to use our beauty recycling scheme.
  • You’re helping to create a better planet: You can feel satisfied and proud knowing that you’re helping to create a brighter future for your tiny tots by not contributing to polluting landfills. You can enjoy using our nourishing bodycare with the knowledge that you’re also reducing your carbon footprint.
  • A simple, easy-to-follow process: Knowing how to recycle your beauty empties can sometimes be confusing and time consuming. Our recycling scheme is a fuss-free, easy-to-use process that can be done by following a few simple steps.

What Happens To The Recycled Products?

After the waste is collected and recycled into a raw material, it is then sold onto manufacturing companies who complete the recycling journey by producing end-products. What do these products include? From plastic shipping pallets, outdoor furniture, storage containers, bins, playground surface containers and much more!

2. Our New Plastic Neutral Mission

We have partnered with rePurpose Global, the world’s first plastic credit platform who are dedicated to reducing waste, enriching and reviving lives and bringing back the balance in nature.

Their main mission is to help businesses and people (like us) around the world become plastic neutral by helping to empower innovators and pioneers on the frontlines of fighting to protect the future of our planet.

What Is Plastic Neutral?

To put it simply, mama, plastic neutral means that for every amount of plastic waste that has been created an equal amount is recovered and removed from the environment, which is done by a company or business through a recycling or waste management scheme, like ours.

But, it is important to mention that plastic neutral is not the same as being a ‘plastic free’ brand, as this means that a company does not use any plastic at all.

Our Impact Project: Aurangabad, India

Mama Mio is helping to fund the collection of low value plastic waste in Aurangabad, India that would otherwise end up polluting nature, by an all female crew!

Over 50% of the plastic waste that is produces in the urban cities of India is classed as multi-layered plastic (MLP). This plastic does not get collected because it has no commercial recycling value and there is a lack of collection infrastructure.

How It Works

Muti-layered plastic from decentralized areas including private and commercial establishments and the streets is collected by waste workers and taken to a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) to be sorted, cleaned and processed.

Aurangabad is a landlocked city located in central India. Mama Mio’s impact project will help prevent plastic from ending up in landfills around the country. This project is also completely ran by women, from the founders to the operators at the facilities! Inspiring, right mama?
